Saturday Night at the Movies #11 – The Descendants

I had a hot date for Friday night, and she left the selection completely to my discretion.  (She’s acting like a keeper.)  My friend Kevin strongly suggested that we see “The Grey,” with Liam Neeson, but I decided to go with “The Descendants.”  Part of my thinking was that “The Descendants” was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, but mainly I was influenced by its 90% Tomato rating as compared to only 70% for “The Grey.”

Although something came up Friday, my date and I were able to see the movie on Sunday night, and it was everything I would expect from a movie with a 90% rating and a Best Picture, Academy Award nomination.  The story was engrossing and the acting was superb.  George Clooney deserves his Best Actor nomination, and the supporting cast was flawless – especially memorable were Clooney’s father-in-law Robert Forster and Clooney’s cousin Beau Bridges.  I’m afraid that the actor who played the villain (Matthew Lillard) did such a good job that he will be forever typecast as a jerk, just like villain in “Ghost” – Tony Goldwyn.

Clooney’s oldest daughter, played by Shailene Woodley, makes perhaps too quick a transition from a spoiled-rotten teenager to a thoughtful, loving young adult.  And even her friend Sid, who provides wonderful comic relief, transforms unrealistically from an empty-headed numbskull to a good-natured young man with a considerable amount of common sense and good judgment.

Roger Ebert gave the movie a perfect four stars.  I agree.  The only thing missing was romance.

    • Unfortunately, I made a battlefield decision to tell her about my baggage. I hope she can handle it.
