Saturday Night at the Movies #59 – The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012) is one of those rare movies directed at my demographic – i.e., retirees wondering how to best transition to their golden years.  The film centers of seven sad British retirees who are lured to a dilapidated retirement hotel in India by a deceptive travel brochure.  The retirees are each remarkable characters, from the noble played by Tom Wilkinson and Judi Dench to the loathsome played by Penelope Wilton.  Bill Nighy and Maggie Smith are also excellent.  And to add some local flavor, there is problematic romance between a call-center girl and the aspiring hotel manager.

I have some secondhand experience with life in India through a close friend who grew up there, and this movie, which was filmed in India, seems to be an accurate reflection on what I have learned.  Roger Ebert called it “charming, funny, and heartwarming” and gave it three and a half stars.  My sentiments exactly.  The Rotten Tomato critics score it at 77% and the audience at 80%.  According to Wikipedia, the movie was such a financial success that a sequel is being discussed, with all of the principals wanting to come back.  Unfortunately, that is not possible because one of them didn’t make it to the end of the movie.
