For Love of the Game is an excellent movie about an aging baseball player who, through a series of flashbacks, sees how his singular focus on baseball has cost him his relationship with a girlfriend. The movie enables Kevin Costner to return to America’s pastime following his successes in Bull Durham (1988) and Field of Dreams (1989).
The critics gave the movie mixed reviews (54% by Rotten Tomatoes), while its audience was a bit more favorable at 77%. I rate it even higher, at three and a half stars out of four. Costner, who actually looks and throws like a major league pitcher, is excellent. His character not only is likeable, but also possesses the good and bad characteristics that are commonly found in star athletes. Kelly Preston plays his love interest, and the setting is NYC and Yankee stadium, two of my favorite places.
Time well spent.
