Saturday Night at the Movies #99 – Don Jon and Fruitvale Station

Don Jon (2013) is a romantic comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, and Julianne Moore.  Gordon-Levitt, who previously starred in (500) Days of Summer, wrote, directed, and starred in Don Jon.  The story involves a young working-class womanizer who finds the girl of his dreams, but loses her because of his addiction to pornography.  Although the characters and plot are unrealistic, the subject matter (both on-line and live sex) keeps your interest, and the ending has a twist that finally gives the movie some meaning.  The Rotten Tomato critics give it 81%, while the audience gives it 64%.  I’m not sure what the critics saw, but I’ll go with the audience and give it two stars out of four.

Fruitvale Station (2013) is a drama about a day in the life of Oscar Grant, an inner city, Bay-area black kid trying to make a life with his Hispanic girlfriend and their daughter.  It is based on a true story.  There are four characters, including the kid’s mother, that you really care about.  (In contrast, I didn’t really care about the characters in Don Jon, even the beautiful Scarlett.)  Rotten Tomatoes loves it – with the critics at 94% and the audience at 89%.  I loved it, too, and give it four stars out of four.
