Mayor Castro announced today that he is boycotting Buc-ees, the most popular gas station in the region, because its owners have endorsed Dan Patrick, the likely Republican nominee for Lt. Governor. Castro urged the boycott based on Patrick’s hard-line against illegal immigration. Apparently this issue is in the same category as same-sex marriage and abortion rights – i.e., opponents are immoral cretins, and there is no place for civility. Based on this precedent, a sane observer might wonder if Republicans will retaliate by boycotting Los Barrios, one the most popular Mexican restaurants in town, because its owner recently endorsed the Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor, Leticia Van de Putte.
I wonder why advocates can’t focus their attention on the politicians who are responsible for making policy instead of attacking non-politicians who are merely exercising their democratic right to endorse a candidate. Mayor Castro has finally agreed to debate Patrick on the immigration issue and that should be enough opportunity to avenge his cause. He doesn’t need to take his venom out on an innocent, civic-minded civilian.
When thinking about this conduct, the word that comes to mind is childish. I suspect Mayor Castro is showing his age, much like he did in a parade when Joaquin and he switched places as a gag. This is not a game and these guys are not ready for prime-time.
