The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012) is a Danish movie about an atheist blue-grass musician and his Christian tattoo artist/wife who meet, marry, have a baby, and then deal with their daughter’s illness. The film, which is based on a play written by Johann Heldenbergh (and he snared the starring role), was nominated for a Foreign Language Oscar, and the Rotten Tomato critics loved the movie at 81%, with the audience even higher at 85%. I didn’t like it nearly as much. Heldenbergh, who in the movie mocks creationism and asserts that he descended from a monkey, actually looks like someone who escaped from the set of Planet of the Apes. Neither Heldenbergh nor his co-star Veerle Baetens emanate any warmth, which makes it hard to empathize with their plight. I give the movie only two stars out of four.
