A couple of weeks ago, I was reading some Facebook posts about the hit movie called Lone Survivor. According to many, it was one of the most emotionally-exhausting movies they had ever seen. When I asked a friend whether I should read the book first, she suggested that I should see the movie first, but also suggested reading a similar book (about the SEALs) titled Fearless. Mission accomplished.
Fearless is a biography about Adam Brown. Although the subtitle serves as a spoiler alert – The Undaunted Courage and Ultimate Sacrifice of Navy SEAL Team SIX Operator Adam Brown – the story is also about Brown losing his way as a young adult and then finding his way back to Midwestern values. Brown’s story reminds me of Law Man by Shon Hopwood. Both Brown and Hopwood are stories of redemption. As I noted in my review of Law Man, “[Hopwood] came from a solid, supportive family and community in Nebraska.” Similarly, Brown came from a solid, supportive family and community in Arkansas. Both did high school sports and then went bad – Hopwood with crime and Brown with drugs – only to find redemption through the love of an amazing woman and Jesus.
While Hopwood’s story remains a work in progress, Brown made the “ultimate sacrifice.”
